Medical Marriage

Ever since my husband started residency I've searched for literature on the topic, especially literature from the spouses perspective.  I'm one of those people who, upon approaching a new endeavor, looks for a book on the topic.  One of these days I will write a book on this thing termed "the medical marriage".  I recently stumbled upon a new resource that I thought I'd share with you all.

I found this blog called "The Secret Lives of Doctor's Wives".  It has lots of great commentary and resources too.  Not a lot of postings have been written recently but I'm secretly hoping that maybe the author, Gail Konop Baker, is working on a book on the topic!  She wrote another book on dealing with Cancer, called "Cancer is a Bitch: Or I'd rather be having a Midlife Crisis".  I haven't read it yet but it could be a good read for our book group.

I would love to hear how others who are married to residents or doctors cope with the challenges of the medical marriage?  I try to remind myself of the amazing talent that my husband has and of all of the strong, resilient resident and attending spouses that I know, who are examples of how a medical marriage can work.

Devour Downtown - Winter Fest

January 24 - February 5 is Devour Downtown - Winter Fest in Indianapolis. Lots of 2 for $30 deals and even more 3- to 5-course meals for $30 per person. A great excuse to get out of the house this winter and try something new. Highly recommend!

Over 45 restaurants are participating this year. The list even meal deals at Creation Cafe (2 for $30) and Euphoria ($30/person) which are owned by one of our very own Scrubmates, Lynn Shepard! So far, we've tried Mesh and R-Bistro and both were phenomenal. Stopped by 45degrees tonight but it was packed due to a pub crawl.

Upcoming Scrubmates Events

Hi All,

I just updated our website with the most recent best picks list, newsletter, and upcoming events

I hope to see new and returning faces at some of our upcoming events.  I'm especially excited about dessert gourmet night and the Indianapolis Indian's Game!  We just got my husbands call schedule for Aug/Sept which let me finally rsvp yes to these events.  Before we had my son, Julian, I used to be excited when scrubmates events were scheduled on a night that my husband was on-call because it gave me something to do in the evening while he was working at the hospital.  But now, it's the opposite, I tend to hope that he'll be home from work in time to put Julian to bed so that I can make it to a scrubmates event.  It's always worth while to spend time with other spouses of residents.  I learn so much from hearing about the experiences of others in the group.  Its also great that Scrubmates is open to people coming to events as often or rarely as their schedule permits--I know that during some rotations when my husband is on-call a lot it may be several weeks before I can make it to a scrubmates event!  Even if I can't make it to an event, it's nice to visit our web site, facebook page, or blog to see what's been happening.

A Little Bit of Culture!

Hey everyone! We had a great time tonight at India Garden in Broad Ripple for July's Arts and Culture event! We enjoyed some delicious Indian cuisine, and then went to BRICS (Broad Ripple Ice Cream Station) on the Monon Trail for some ice cream--a perfect summer treat! Be sure to look for the evite for the August Arts and Culture event: The Rathskeller on Tuesday, August 17th.

If you're looking to enjoy some additional culture around Indy, I definitely recommend checking out Devour Downtown, which goes from August 2nd-15th. Devour Downtown is basically a "restaurant week," and a variety of restaurants in the Downtown area offer fixed price menu deals. Check out http://www.devourdowntown.org/summer.html for more information!

Also, the Indianapolis Museum of Art Summer Movie Series is in full swing, featuring a different movie every Friday night through August 27th! For more information, see http://www.imamuseum.org/programs/films.

We've started sending out welcome e-mails to new families on our lists. We're still working on getting everyone entered into our list, but let us know if you don't get an e-mail shortly. We may have your address incorrectly. You can insert your favorite joke about doctors' handwriting here!

We've got events coming up in the next few weeks we want to make sure everyone knows about. On July 17 at 4pm, our playgroup will head to the Indianapolis zoo to enjoy the sprinkler park. On July 23 at 7pm, our book club will meet at Creation Cafe to discuss The Shack by William P. Young. Next month's selection will be Sag Harbor by Colson Whitehead (Aug 27). Welcome families of new residents and fellows!

Scrubmates met lots of the new residents and fellows at Orientation the last 2 Tuesdays! We've collected lots of spouses/significant others' e-mails and given out even more of our information packets. I'll be sending out a welcome e-mail and info about our upcoming events as soon as we get everything entered in our database.

I'm excited to met everyone! Let us know how you are adjusting to residency in Indy and if there is anything we can do to help you out.

Summer's here!

Well, it feels like it's here anyway... Our yard is out of control, the kids are in shorts, and Matt's asking when we are going to turn on the AC- sounds like summer to me!

Scrubmates will be kicking the summer off May 30th with our Farewell Picnic. We'll be saying goodbye to many of our friends as they finish residency and move on for fellowships or "real" jobs. I'm so happy for each of you but it pains me to see so many great friends moving. I hope everyone can make it to the picnic for a celebration and some goodbyes- check your e-mail for the evite with details.

Please let us know if you are not getting evite invitations to events. And, we would really appreciate if you opened the evites you receive and RSVP. Even if you have to change your reply later, it really helps us know that the message was received.

We've got a lot of great summer events coming up! Watch for announcements and evites. Invite others you know who may be interested in the group to events. Help us get the word out and be sure to mention us at any of your department's parties or events. Lots of new residents and their families will be moving here shortly and we want to make sure they hear about Scrubmates. Pass the word!!!

August 1, 2-5pm will be our Welcome party! Save the date and hope to see you all there.

Updated-Insurance to change!!!

IU has just announced that our medical insurance will be changing to Anthem effective July 1! The decision to change was just made this morning and more details will follow. The information I've been given is that premiums will continue to be paid by IU, but there may be changes to co-pays. Cigna will continue to be our dental insurance provider.

Please make sure that your spouse watches for and forwards e-mails with details and the new physician provider directory. You also might want to be proactive and check with any current healthcare providers about whether they accept Anthem. Especially anyone expecting after July 1!

Sorry for the late notice on this one! I didn't hear any rumors till this afternoon, but I will keep you posted with any updates.

Anne

Update: Sounds as if it is all set for July 1. Our new cards should arrive in June! Your spouse should have gotten an e-mail with the details. I forwarded the e-mail to everyone on our e-mail list as well.
